Birgit Matzerath
It’s very special to perform J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier 1 on the occasion of the composer’s birthday AND 300 years after the work was published in 1722. There’s a time limit to the use of the Sing-for-Hope piano at Port Authority, so I’ll do it in two sessions, on March 21 and March 28. Bio: Birgit Matzerath holds a degree in piano, and a teaching degree in Music and English from Hochschule für Musik, Cologne, and the University of Cologne in Germany. Additionally, she pursued piano studies with Oxana Yablonskaya and Seymour Bernstein, whom she considers her most important teacher. Before relocating to the United States in 2002, she taught at community music schools in the Cologne area and appeared frequently as a collaborative pianist. From 2002-2009 she taught at the Concord Community Music School in Concord NH.In 2009 she moved to Maplewood, NJ, where she maintains a private studio. In addition to teaching she is a performer, lecturer and writer. The work of J.S. Bach holds a special place in her repertoire. One of her most recent projects was a one-year series of monthly lecture recitals on all Preludes and Fugues of WTC 1 in 2020/21. Recordings can be found on youtube, and articles about the pieces can be found on her blog”Music, Life and other Challenges” on blogspot. Her memoir “More than the World in Black and White – How Music came Alive and my Life became Music” is available on Amazon.
