Christin Hablewitz – 10 Hour Bach Marathon at Union Station
Christin Hablewitz is passionate in her efforts to expand the repertoire of the clarinet to meet our ever-evolving global society. While rooted in classical and contemporary clarinet, Christin has a distinctive sound across different music genres and global styles. She has branched off to study, perform, educate and expose listeners a variety of amazing music including, traditional Persian and North Indian, Romani, klezmer, Brazilian choro and America’s hybridizations of it all. She is a graduate from California Institute of the Arts with an MFA in clarinet performance, along with a MA in Creativity & Arts Education from San Francisco State University and BA in Music Education from Northern Illinois University. Christin is found performing on clarinet, bass clarinet, flute and steel drums in various ensembles throughout California, including: Los Angeles Clarinet Choir, Zetz Klezmer Ensemble, KREation Ensemble, Los Angles Symphony Winds, Collective Media Guild, Conference of the Birds, Migrating Sound Project, Steel Jam Steel Band and San Francisco’s Punk Rock Orchestra. She has been a guest artist in different ensembles including, Isura String Quartet, Jherek Bischoff Group and the California Shakespeare Festival. Christin is active music educator is the Director of the Instrumental Music Conservatory at Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena, California.
Why I want to participate in the Bach Marathon?
At a recent recital of Bach’s violin’s partitas I was talking to the violinist about his wonderful performance and about how I felt envious that the Bach wrote this this amazing and relevant music for the violin to study and perform and unfortunately did not write anything for the clarinet because during his time the instrument was still in its infancy. He response was of course you should play Bach and he truly believed that even Bach would approve. So, here I am, super excited to perform Bach, a transcription of his Cello Suite No. 2 in celebration of his birth.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Solo Cello Suites are some of the most iconic classical music works. The beautiful suites create a musical journey of what a solo instrument possibilities, emotional expression and states of being. Each Suite is constructed from a prelude followed by five dances, including the allemande, the courante, the sarabande and the gigue. Since Bach composed his Suites for Unaccompanied Cello between 1717–1723, they’ve been transcribed for more than 19 different instruments, including the clarinet, tuba and ukulele. It’s testament to the music’s diversity and intrigue that so many instrumentalists, not just cellists, want to sample Bach’s genius for themselves.
