Wren at Ten, Bach Birthday Edition

This week’s demonstration of the c1740 English organ in the Wren Chapel of the College of William & Mary will be an all-Bach program including music for organ and also for organ and recorder (a transcription of the Bach flute sonata BWV 1031).  Performers are Thomas Marshall (organ) and Ruth van Baak Griffioen (recorder) from the Music Dept of the College of William & Mary.

Sandy Kiefer, cellist, will lead 25 students from the KinderU Suzuki Music Academy, Hong Kong. All of the cello students will perform from memory. The students age from four to 12 years old. It will be outside the Star Ferry Central Terminal.

Ellen Jung | Kira Blumberg | Jeff Gauthier | Maggie Parkins | Art of the Fugue | Claremont Laemmle 5

Claremont!, these Claremont locals will be performing the Art of the Fugue at the Laemmle Claremont 5 at 2pm. Go have some serious fun with them!

Kira Blumberg, violist, is originally from Hyde Park, New York, where she began studying the violin at the age of four and switched to the viola six years later. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University, where she studied with Michael Zaretsky and Steven Ansell, and a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Toby Appel.
Currently Ms. Blumberg is Principal Viola of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. She plays with the Los Angeles Music Center Opera Orchestra and free-lances extensively throughout the greater Los Angeles area. She is a member of ensembleGREEN, a new music group in Los Angeles and is on the faculty at the University of Redlands. She is very active in the recording industry, working on many movies including A Beautiful Mind, Bourne Identity, and The Spiderwick Chronicles. She is married to Eric Lindholm, Associate Professor of Music and Orchestra Conductor at Pomona College.
In her free time Ms. Blumberg enjoys knitting, gardening and picking up toys and food that have been left underfoot by small children.

Violinist Ellen Jung has performed frequently as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician all over the world. She has been featured with the Korean Philharmonic, Taejon Symphony, Republic of Tatarstan Symphony, North York Symphony Orchestra, the Korean-Canadian Symphony Orchestra, and both the University of Toronto Symphony and Chamber Orchestras.  An active chamber musician, Ms. Jung is a member of the award-winning Jung Trio with her two sisters, Jennie and Julie. Together, they have performed throughout North America, Russia, South Korea, Kenya and Mauritius. She has also collaborated with artists such as Shauna Rolston, Erika Raum, Steven Dann, Jacques Israelievitch, Jesse Levine and Syoko Aki.  She has received chamber music coachings from the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Bernadene Blaha, Lorand Fenyves, Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, members of the Tokyo String Quartet, and Paul Katz.
Ms. Jung is currently on faculty at the Claremont School of Music, and is an adjunct professor at the Vanguard University.

Violinist, composer and producer Jeff Gauthier has worked with a wide range of musicians in a variety of creative contexts in a career that has spanned over 25 years. As an improvising violinist, he has performed and recorded with Yusef Lateef & Adam Rudolph on the album The World At Peace for Meta Records, The Alex Cline Ensemble on albums for ECM & Cryptogramophone, and The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, Quartetto Stig and the Cline Gauthier Stinson trio, all for Nine Winds Records.

As a classical violinist Gauthier has performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony, the Oregon Bach Festival and the Carmel Bach Festival. He performed on the 2000 Grammy Award winning CD Credo, by Kristoph Penderecki with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus. He has also performed on countless films and TV shows, including almost every Star Trek film and TV show spin-off known to man. He is the executive director of the Jazz Bakery and co runs the Angel City Jazz festival.
Gauthier is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts.
