The Bob Baker Marionette Theater (H.M. # 958) is one of the oldest running puppet theaters in the United States. It opened its doors in November of 1961 and has continued to produce new and exciting shows on a weekly basis for the families of Los Angeles.
Although the theater continues to thrive, unfortunately, the property was sold to a developer in 2010, who plans to turn the landmark theater into high density housing. The project has the opportunity to be a marvel of community development whilst preserving and honoring the cultural significance of the theater. There are ongoing conversations as to what this could look like, but as it stands now, measurements to address the landmark status only replace the currently thriving historically and culturally important resource with a plaque.
But with your voice, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater experience can be preserved and celebrated for generations to come. Please take a moment to issue a public comment to the city (by visiting our website linked below) where you can state the importance the theater has, continues to have, and will have for the L.A. Community. Your comment and voice is our greatest ally in the ongoing battle of cultural and artistic preservation.
The theater is honored to contribute to Bach in the Subway and is happy to align itself with such wonderful and accomplished artists. Bringing the classical arts to the industrial streets of Downtown Los Angeles, has for a long time been a life-long mission for the Bob Baker Marionette Theater. To have the opportunity to perform alongside and in collaboration with artists who share this mission is beyond thrilling.
